Successful ministerial event co-hosted by The Netherlands, the United States and Brazil, sets violence against girls at a higher priority on the international agenda. Minister Verhagen, US Secretary of State Clinton and the Brazilian Minister Amorim co-organized this event, Combating Violence against Girls, at the United Nations in New York, and requested all present, amongst which various ministers and heads of UN agencies, to take their responsibility in the violence against girls, which includes domestic violence, rape and other sexual violence during conflict and the prevention of any sexual exploitation of girls in all possible ways.

The Netherlands will support the work of the Special Representative of the Secretary General of the UN on Violence against Children with an amount of 800,000 euros, which was announced by Minister Verhagen during the event.

‘Violence against children breaks our hearts as mothers and fathers,’ said Minister Verhagen (Foreign Affairs) in his speech during the event. ‘As politicians, we have the ability to do something about this horrendous problem’

The Netherlands supports the resolution of the UN Security Council on women, peace and safety that will be passed next week. The writers of the resolution plead for the appointment of a Special Representative on Sexual Violence during Conflict, so that the problem can be tackled more effectively.

Minister Verhagen invited Special Representative Marta Santos Pais, on behalf of the government, to also analyze the situation and conditions of children in The Netherlands.

‘Stopping violence against girls is a top government-wide priority in the Netherlands,’ Verhagen stated. ‘Our responsibility never ends. But we must do everything in our power to end all violence against all girls everywhere.’
