In New York, the United Nations has adopted a resolution to reduce violence against women through improved international monitoring. The resolution, an initiative of the Netherlands and France, calls on all UN member states to combat violence against women.
‘We had to negotiate long and hard before all the UN member states supported the resolution,’ foreign minister Maxime Verhagen said. ‘I am happy that it has been adopted. This shows that more and more countries are committed to upholding and promoting women’s rights.’
The resolution calls on nations to report violence against women. The UN, with Dutch funding, collects this information and identifies the worst violations.
Combating violence against women is one of the priorities of the Netherlands’ human rights policy. In recent years, the United Nations General Assembly has adopted various resolutions, initiated by the Netherlands and France, on protecting women more effectively from violence.
