‘The Netherlands appreciates the necessity of cancelling the second round of the presidential election, with just one candidate left,’ said Minister of Foreign Affairs Maxime Verhagen in response to the decision by the Independent Election Committee of Afghanistan.
‘President Karzai received over 49% of the votes in the first round. This means that Afghanistan will be getting a president who enjoys substantial public support,’ said the minister. When it comes to forming the new government, Mr Verhagen hopes to see appointments that reflect broad popular support and clear international agreements.
‘The conduct of the elections also necessitates a broadly representative new government that can ensure security and development. The international community must be able to make clear agreements with the new government about good governance, combating corruption and respect for human rights.’
