22 Jan 10 Haiti: €83 mln raised during national call for help, adopted children arrive in the Netherlands
During a national fund raising event last night for Haiti, broadcasted live on three TV Channels, the Dutch population donated €41,5 mln for Haiti. This amount was doubled by Minister Koenders, making the total an astonishing €83 mln. On the same day, almost 100 adopted Haitian children arrived in the Netherlands, which was the result of close cooperation between the Haitian and Dutch governments. (more)

17 Jan 10 Verhagen: EU is preparing security mission to Haiti
The European Union is preparing a mission to Haiti to maintain security and public order, in response to a request by the United Nations. This was confirmed by foreign minister Maxime Verhagen following a telephone conversation with the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton and a number of his European colleagues. 13 Jan 10 Netherlands sends rescue team to Haiti, makes €2 million available for emergency relief
Minister Koenders has decided to send an Urban Search and Rescue Team to Haiti, which will leave for the disaster area today. He also decided to make €2 million available for emergency relief. (more)

On 12 January 2010, Prime Minister Balkenende received the first copy of the report of the Committee of Inquiry on Iraq. After studying the report carefully, the Government will publish its official reaction to the report. (more)
11 Jan 10 The Netherlands increases ‘rule of law’ contribution in Palestinian Territories
This month, the Netherlands will increase its contribution to the development of the Palestinian civil security sector in the West Bank. The number of Dutch personnel participating in the EU Police Coordinating Office for Palestinian Police (EUPOL COPPS) will rise from two to five. The Netherlands will also finance the construction of a prison and a police training centre in Jericho. (more)
7 Jan 10 Verhagen pleased that US has lifted travel restrictions on people with HIV
Foreign minister Maxime Verhagen is pleased that people living with HIV can travel freely to the United States as of this year. At international level, the Netherlands has always advocated that people with HIV should be able to live normal lives without unnecessary restrictions on their freedom of movement. (more)

23 Dec 09 Retirement age to be raised to 67 in two stages
The government has announced plans to raise the age of retirement under the General Old Age Pensions Act (AOW) to 67 years to 66 in 2020 and 67 in 2025. The new legislation will include measures to enable people to work longer. (more)

15 Dec 09 Koenders calls for scientific cooperation between rich and poor to combat climate change
"The Netherlands can put its expertise on coastal protection to very good use in Bangladesh and other countries. I want to stimulate scientific cooperation between rich and poor countries. This book takes the first step in that direction." 11 Dec 09 Verhagen concerned about fate of Syrian Geuzen Medal winner
Foreign minister Maxime Verhagen has urged the Syrian president to release Syrian human rights defender Haytham al-Maleh immediately pending his trial. The 2006 winner of the Geuzen Medal was arrested by state security in October 2009 after he had given an interview to an independent TV station. (more)
10 Dec 09 Uruzgan builds respects for human rights
International Human Rights Day was commemorated extensively in Uruzgan today. A radio show explained the meaning and importance of human rights. Both the Dutch and the Afghan people in Uruzgan agreed that ‘respect for human rights is something that you have to build every day.’ (more)

7 Dec 09 Koenders: OPEC must deliver on commitment to emergency aid funds
Last week Sir John Holmes, UN Emergency Relief Coordinator, met with development minister Bert Koenders. Sir John is leading a campaign to encourage major donors to make extra contributions to OCHA (UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs) emergency aid funds. Mr Koenders believes that oil-producing countries should contribute more. (more)

The positive assessment given by the chief prosecutor at the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) is an important factor for the Netherlands in considering further steps towards Serbia’s integration with the European Union, Minister of Foreign Affairs Maxime Verhagen has said. This was foreign minister Maxime Verhagen’s response today to President Obama’s speech on the new strategy and timetable for the campaign. The Treaty of Lisbon enters into force December 1. The changes in Europe since the fall of the Wall - the number of countries has doubled since then - called for new rules. Rules that make the Union more democratic and more transparent and give more clout to our interests in the world to come. (more)

In a conversation with Burma analyst Thant Myint-U, Minister of Foreign Affairs Maxime Verhagen expressed concern about the lack of democratisation in Burma, the oppressive human rights situation, the treatment of Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi, in particular the extension of her house arrest, and military action against ethnic groups. ‘The presence of President Obama and Prime Minister Wen Jiabao of China at the climate summit in Copenhagen shows just how important this meeting is. Foreign minister Maxime Verhagen has described Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s announced ten-month moratorium on the construction of new West Bank settlements as a step in the right direction. The Netherlands will be the headquarters of a new international institute on counterterrorism. One of the institute’s main tasks will be to develop legal instruments that will make it easier to punish terrorists. The Dutch Human Rights Defenders Tulip, an award with which the Netherlands honours and publicises the work of human rights defenders the world over, has now been officially registered. 29 Sep 09 Netherlands ratifies Protocol on the Involvement of Children in Armed Conflict
During the UN Treaty Event the Netherlands deposited, on the 24th of September, the act of ratification of the Optional Protocol to the Convention on the Rights of the Child, regarding the involvement of children in armed conflict. The Protocol is now in force for the Kingdom in its entirety. The Netherlands Permanent Representative to the UN also signed the Optional Protocol to the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights. In Rotterdam, on September 23, the Convention on Contracts for the International Carriage of Goods Wholly or Partly by Sea opened to signature in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. In total 19 states, including the Netherlands signed this new convention, which will be known as 'the Rotterdam rules'. The UN called 2009 'a very good year' in terms of progress towards universal participation to international treaties. (more)

Minister Verhagen, US Secretary of State Clinton and the Brazilian Minister Amorim co-organized this event, Combating Violence against Girls, at the United Nations in New York, and requested all present, amongst which various ministers and heads of UN agencies, to take their responsibility in the violence against girls, which includes domestic violence, rape and other sexual violence during conflict and the prevention of any sexual exploitation of girls in all possible ways. The Human Rights Committee under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights concluded today its deliberations on the human rights situation in the Netherlands. The Committee was interested in particular in the Dutch asylum procedure, in long pre-trial detention periods in the context of counter-terrorism measures, in the participation of women in government and the labour market, the high number of cases of euthanasia, the wearing of headscarves and religious symbols in public, detention of juveniles, and the presence of lawyers during police questioning. 13 Jul 09 Uruzgan: emergency number for Afghans
Governor Assadullah Hamdam, Ambassador Hans Blankenberg and General Peter van Uhm yesterday opened a new coordination centre for the security services in Uruzgan. The centre will enable the army, the police and the internal security service to work more closely together and respond to incidents more rapidly. Ordinary Afghans can call the centre on an emergency number to report security threats. (more)

In the debate on Inter-religious dialogue the Netherlands Permanent Represenative, Frank Majoor, pointed to different ways in which the Netherlands has facilitated and will facilitate interreligious dialogue. He added that the dialogue itself is the responsibility of the believers and the representatives of spiritual and humanist traditions. He stressed that identities are based on many characteristics and that religion or belief is only one of them. (more)

On the initiative of the Netherlands and Belgium, the Third Committee of the United Nations has unanimously adopted a resolution calling on UN member states to intensify efforts to combat all forms of violence against women and punish the perpetrators. (more)

Minister Verhagen does not rule out the deployment of a Quick Reaction Force of the EU to the Democratic Republic of the Congo as support for the UN-peacekeeping force MONUC. 21 Oct 08 Dutch cameraman was killed by Russian cluster bomb
Dutch cameraman Stan Storimans, who was killed in the Georgian city of Gori on 12 August 2008, was the victim of a cluster munition. The munition was propelled by a type of rocket that is only found in Russia’s military arsenal. That is the conclusion of the mission that Minister of Foreign Affairs Maxime Verhagen appointed to investigate the circumstances of Mr Storimans’ death. (more)

The European foreign ministers are to examine whether it is possible to deny market access to products made with the worst forms of child labour. Over the next two years the Netherlands will be investing an extra 7.5 million euros in promoting human rights. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs' human rights fund, from which it supports human rights defenders and related projects, will gradually be raised, from 22.5 million euros this year to 25 million in 2009 and, ultimately, 27.5 million in 2010.
