It is clear the conflict must end. Syria has no future with Assad, and Mr Hague and Mr Rosenthal agreed he must stand down. This means introducing tougher sanctions to hit the regime hard. Mr Hague and Mr Rosenthal also noted the vital importance of the position taken by Russia and China.

The situation in Libya was also discussed. Mr Hague and Mr Rosenthal were both confident about the outcome of the recent elections in Libya. They also spoke about Egyptian president Mohammed Mursi’s first weeks in office, and his rapid order to reconvene the dissolved parliament.

Diplomacy
Mr Hague visited Shell in the morning, and spoke on Diplomatic Excellence in the 21st Century in the afternoon at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. A key conclusion drawn from the meeting was the importance of flexibility in modern diplomacy’s response to an ever-changing environment.

The day ended with a meeting at the Binnenhof, where Mr Rosenthal and Mr Hague discussed international law and justice. As international legal capital, The Hague was the ideal location for this event.
