Rosenthal makes critical comments about Security Council

Foreign Minister Uri Rosenthal has asked UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to do more to stop the violence in Syria. ‘The Security Council has been unable to reach a consensus on Syria. Every day we are shocked by dreadful images of the dead and wounded.’

Foreign Minister Uri Rosenthal has asked UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to do more to stop the violence in Syria. ‘The Security Council has been unable to reach a consensus on Syria. Every day we are shocked by dreadful images of the dead and wounded.’

‘I blame the members of the Security Council for failing to deal adequately with the Syrian regime,’ Mr Rosenthal. ‘The Syrian people are paying a high price for that failure. I have urged Ban Ki-moon to do everything to ensure that the members of the Council are no longer paralysed by divisions. The Council must take decisive action, in a spirit of solidarity. The violence in Syria has to stop. Russia and China must lift their veto.’

Mr Rosenthal spoke with Mr Ban during a meeting in the margins of the General Assembly of the United Nations in New York.

Solidarity
Mr Ban called Syria his greatest concern, agreeing that it is essential for the Security Council to reach agreement on the country and that solidarity is important. According to the Secretary-General the Syrian president will ultimately be held responsible for the acts of cruelty perpetrated against Syrian citizens.

Mr Ban thanked the Minister for the Netherlands’ efforts in support of Syrian victims. He called the Netherlands one of the UN’s most active members.
