(New York) Foreign Minister Uri Rosenthal has urged the president of the Palestinian Authority, Mahmoud Abbas, to work to achieve greater progress in talks with Israel. The Minister believes it is important for the two parties to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict to reopen their dialogue without delay.

‘My message to President Abbas was clear and no different from what I said to Israel: negotiate, negotiate, negotiate. The Palestinian Authority and Israel must start talking again. And given the unrest in the region, time is of the essence.’

Mr Rosenthal stressed that a lasting peace had to be found through dialogue, on the basis of the two-state principle. The Netherlands helps wherever it can, maintaining good relations with both the Palestinians and the Israelis.

The Netherlands also invests know-how and financial resources in the Palestinian water and agriculture sectors. The two parties work together on security issues as well. Mr Rosenthal also discussed the delivery of two container scanners for the purpose of ensuring the safe import and export of goods.
