Rosenthal puts every embassy to work for business

Foreign minister Uri Rosenthal believes that all Dutch embassies should make a concerted effort to assist Dutch business. ‘The Dutch economy depends on exports and international links,’ Mr Rosenthal said. ‘So I want every embassy to put its shoulder to the wheel to promote Dutch economic interests.’

‘Dutch diplomats at embassies and consulates need to defend the interests of Dutch entrepreneurs all over the world,’ said the minister, ‘thus contributing to economic growth in the Netherlands.’

Mr Rosenthal made these comments at a meeting in New York with Dutch entrepreneurs, including representatives of design and creative industry, internet and other IT companies, and marketing firms. He discussed with them the opportunities they see, the challenges they face and what the Ministry of Foreign Affairs can do for them.

The companies’ representatives said that they benefit greatly from the services that Dutch diplomatic missions offer. As one participant said, ‘An embassy can open doors for us at other companies and foreign governments that would otherwise be closed.’ Embassies are also a useful forum where Dutch entrepreneurs can gather and exchange experiences.
