International community urges Israel to halt expansion of settlements
The Netherlands is gravely concerned about Israel’s announced expansion of its settlements, including 2,610 residential units in Givat Hamatos.
Israel’s settlements in the occupied Palestinian Territories are illegal under international law and form an obstacle to the conclusion of a peace agreement.
The international community, including the US and the EU, has urged Israel to halt its expansion of the settlements. Foreign minister Frans Timmermans fully endorses that position.
‘The focus now must be on a swift resumption of direct negotiations aimed at a definitive peace agreement,’ Mr Timmermans said. ‘Both parties must work to strengthen mutual trust. The expansion of Israeli settlements in the occupied Palestinian Territories, including East Jerusalem, is at odds with – and undermines the scope for – a two-state solution, in which Israel and a future Palestinian state would exist side by side in peace and security.’
