Ambassadors’ Conference begins

‘For the Netherlands, Worldwide’ is the title of the annual conference which brings together Dutch ambassadors and consuls general in The Hague for a programme addressing current international themes and policy questions. There are many challenges, so an ambitious approach is called for. ‘The Netherlands must provide excellent service, both when it comes to promoting trade and performing consular tasks,’ said foreign minister Frans Timmermans.

The opening day is a moment for the many people who represent the Netherlands abroad to get reacquainted. As for the conference programme, it features various brainstorming sessions with ministers on areas of government policy, including economic diplomacy, Europe, development cooperation and security. ‘This week we will learn from each other and bring ambassadors up to speed on the issues of the day here in the Netherlands,’ explained Mr Timmermans.

As the theme ‘For the Netherlands, Worldwide’ suggests, the focus of the conference is on the Netherlands’ role in making the world a safer and more prosperous place. During the conference, ambassadors and consuls general will talk with colleagues, members of parliament and representatives of civil society and the business community. Not all the discussions are political in nature. The question of how a modern diplomatic service should be organised will also be on the agenda.

The Ambassadors’ Conference runs from Monday 14 January to Thursday 17 January. The opening day will be followed by a business day (Tuesday), a day of management workshops on the ministry’s future (Wednesday) and special sessions on topics including the image of the Netherlands, consular diplomacy and trade (Thursday). After a week of intensive consultations and networking, the ambassadors and consuls general will return to their missions.
