Netherlands pledges €7.5 million to support High Commissioner for Human Rights
The Netherlands will next year contribute €7.5 million to support the work of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights. Foreign minister Frans Timmermans received the High Commissioner, Ms Navi Pillay, this morning in The Hague. During the meeting Mr Timmermans and Ms Pillay signed an agreement for the Dutch contribution.
The Office of the High Commissioner plays a key role in protecting and promoting human rights around the globe. The Netherlands is one of its largest donors.
The High Commissioner is visiting the Netherlands as part of the International Day against Homophobia and Transphobia. Ms Pillay is a prominent advocate of rights for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community. She thanked Mr Timmermans for the pioneering role the Netherlands is playing in promoting their rights.
The Netherlands is a candidate for membership of the UN Human Rights Council for the 2015-2017 period.
