Foreign minister Frans Timmermans has spoken out about the ongoing wave of violence that has recently engulfed Iraq, responding to reports by the UN that more than 1,000 people have been killed and over 2,300 wounded in violence over the past month.

The continual violence in Iraq is a serious concern, not only for Iraq, but also for the region as a whole. My thoughts go out to the many victims of attacks and to their loved ones,’ Mr Timmermans said. ‘Iraq is a country with ambition and opportunities for prosperity. It is sad to see divisions between the country’s various ethnic and religious groups flare up again, especially considering the strong desire that emerged after the civil war of 2005-2006 to work together for a safe, stable and prosperous Iraq.’

The Netherlands supports UN initiatives to bring together Iraq’s Sunnis, Shi’ites and Kurds.
