1 Minister Timmermans opens first ministerial meeting on LGBT rights at the UN

Today, in the margins of the UN General Assembly, foreign minister Frans Timmermans opened a ministerial meeting on equal rights for lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgenders (LGBT). This is the first time that discussions on the position of LGBTs are being held at this level within the UN. Participants included the foreign ministers of Argentina, Brazil, Croatia, Norway and the US, the High Commissioner for Human Rights, and senior officials from France, Japan and New Zealand.

2 Minister Ploumen calls for international action against child marriage

During the UN General Assembly, development minister Lilianne Ploumen announced international action against child marriage. With her Canadian and Ghanaian counterparts, Ms Ploumen has launched an initiative with this goal, which was greeted with enthusiasm at the UN summit.

4 The Netherlands provides €1.5 million for eliminating chemical weapons in Syria

Foreign minister Frans Timmermans has told the House of Representatives that the Netherlands will provide €1.5 million towards the elimination of chemical weapon stockpiles in Syria.

5 Global summit on nuclear security in The Hague

The Nuclear Security Summit being hosted by the Netherlands in March 2014 will be held in the World Forum in The Hague, Minister of Foreign Affairs Uri Rosenthal announced today. Over 50 heads of state and government and representatives of international organisations are expected to attend the event, which will be chaired by the Dutch Prime Minister.
