The Netherlands is discussing closer cooperation with Egypt in such areas as good governance and the rule of law. Foreign minister Uri Rosenthal recently held talks on the subject with his colleague Mohamed Kamel Amr in Cairo.

Speaking on Friday to the United Nations General Assembly, foreign minister Uri Rosenthal expressed the Netherlands’ concern about ‘the widening gap between the increasing expectations we have of the United Nations and the UN’s capacity to deliver.’ ‘People expect a lot of the United Nations, but when push comes to shove they don’t deliver.’
‘The situation in Syria is a daily reminder that we were unable to prevent this tragedy. The global community simply has to do more to prevent crimes against humanity.’ This was foreign minister Uri Rosenthal’s message during a meeting on the Responsibility to Protect at the United Nations. The event, co-hosted by the Netherlands together with ministers from Botswana, Brazil and Denmark, was attended by the Deputy Secretary-General of the UN and 14 other ministers.
Foreign minister Uri Rosenthal still has serious concerns about developments in Iran. He made this statement after holding talks in New York with his Iranian counterpart, Ali Akbar Salehi, on the Iranian nuclear programme and its possible military dimensions, along with Iran’s involvement in the Syrian conflict.
Foreign Minister Uri Rosenthal has asked UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to do more to stop the violence in Syria. ‘The Security Council has been unable to reach a consensus on Syria. Every day we are shocked by dreadful images of the dead and wounded.’
Foreign minister Uri Rosenthal believes that all Dutch embassies should make a concerted effort to assist Dutch business. ‘The Dutch economy depends on exports and international links,’ Mr Rosenthal said. ‘So I want every embassy to put its shoulder to the wheel to promote Dutch economic interests.’
(New York) Foreign Minister Uri Rosenthal has urged the president of the Palestinian Authority, Mahmoud Abbas, to work to achieve greater progress in talks with Israel. The Minister believes it is important for the two parties to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict to reopen their dialogue without delay.
