On 24th of September, the day of the High Level Meeting on the Rule of Law, Foreign Minister Uri Rosenthal chaired a Ministerial Breakfast on “Peaceful Settlement of Conflict”.
The meeting focused on the role of the International Court of Justice and the Permanent Court of Arbitration in settling disputes peacefully, without the threat or use of force. This is a key feature of the Rule of Law, and the Netherlands is host to both institutions. In his introductory remarks Minister Rosenthal focused on arbitration and judicial settlement, as being essential for establishing the Rule of Law at the international level. In promoting the international legal order and Rule of Law, the challenge lies in translating them into concrete action. Accepting the compulsory jurisdiction of the ICJ is, in the view of the Netherlands, one of the best examples of such action.
