Permanent Mission of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to the UN, United States

Costa Rica joins the Coalition of States to promote and protect the freedom of expression online

Today, on World Press Freedom Day, Costa Rica joined the coalition of states that on December 8 & 9 2011 in The Hague, The Netherlands, agreed to actively protect and promote the freedom of expression online.

The Netherlands is honored that that Costa Rica wanted to be part of this coalition. A coalition that is very much needed in a time that the freedom of expression on- as well as off line is very much under pressure. Mostly by governments that fear the mobilizing force of the internet and social media.

In response to all those states that are restricting citizen’s access to the internet, monitor opinions, and applying censorship, it is important to be able to show that there are also countries with a positive attitude towards the free flow of information that stimulates innovation, creativity, and economic growth.

The Netherlands is convinced that Costa Rica, a country with a vibrant media scene, with numerous public and privately owned newspapers, television outlets, and radio stations, will be a valuable and knowledgeable participant within this group of front runners.
